President's Message

Welcome to Rotary year 2013-2014!!!!! I would like to welcome all the active members of our Rotary Club of San Juan to this year’s theme “ENGAGE ROTARY…CHANGE LIVES” On Our 43rd year as the ROTARY CLUB OF SAN JUAN, this rotary year is special as we embark to new challenges, new horizons, and new dreams of making this world a better place to live.   Being a Rotarian to me is a great privilege to be of SERVICE to ALL, SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

As we start a new year let us focus on our strengths as the Mother Club of Zone 7 of Rotary District 3800, setting aside all personal aspirations for the good of all especially those in need in the community that we serve.  Let us continue to take active part in achieving our Club goals and plans.

Last June 29,2013, together with IPP  Jojo Bacarro & Spouse Blenn, PDG Pepe Peralta,  AG Gina Sanchez, PP Doray Giorla, PP Pol Leoncio, and PP Noni Topacio we attended the District 3800 Handover Ceremonies at the Crown Plaza Hotel. DG  Lirio Sandoval turned over the leadership of Rotary District 3800 to DG  Luizo ‘Louie” Ticman.  The finale of the occasion was the dramatic handover of Bell and Gavel from Pres. Jojo to yours truly as First Class President.  DG Louie Ticman generously gave all FCPresidents their respective new gavels.   Also as ,the new District Governor, he  handed his personal donation to the TRF foundation and invited all the FCPresidents to do the same to be truly called a “FIRST CLASS President”.

The new District Governor in his Inaugural speech delivered his vision for the new Rotary year – To quote, ‘My vision for District 3800:    Bigger and “engaged” membership, Productive and meaningful projects, Increased TRF contribution and participation and Vibrant and memorable year of fellowship and goodwill. “

I am very confident that with the FULL SUPPORT and ACTIVE PARTICIPATION of all our fellow Rotarians as manifested in our past undertakings as a SOLID Rotary CLUB of SAN JUAN we will make this vision a REALITY.  Let us continue to be ENGAGED in ROTARY so that together we will be able to CHANGE LIVES…….

Rotary Club of San Juan now all on Board for 2013-2014!   Enjoy ROTARY!!!

Pres. Therese Montecer

Editorial

A New Rotary Year, New Challenges

As RY 2012-2013 ended last week with the RI Convention in Lisbon, Portugal, outgoing RI Pres. Sakuji Tanaka closed last year’s theme Peace Through Service by awarding the Rotary club of Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany through its president Ralf  Trauitwein.  That Club had put to heart that theme and worked on it mainly through sponsoring the composition and recording of a song to teach young people about peace and how Rotary is working to achieve it.  It was also then at the end that President-elect Ron Burton and his family were introduced. Pres Ron highlighted the nearing end of the campaign to eradicate polio now getting a huge lift through the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation, and how The Rotary Foundation will be so very well positioned to help through what was then known as Future Vision.

RI President Ron Burton’s theme for the year is Engage Rotary, Change Lives, which was introduced during the DISTAS in Tagaytay last April by now District Governor Luizo Ticman. It was also during that occasion that the RI Presidential Citation Program and the District Goals and Thrusts were presented. This was our Club’s bases for formulating our Plans and Objectives for this Rotary Year.

Changing Lives? That is something the Filipinos need to do. Not only to change other people’s lives but also their very own as well. There is this continuing flash statements in the Government’s radio station DWBR about Peace and that it begins with one’s self. This is a throwback to Pope Francis’ statements about Peace which echoes some words of the song “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and let it begin with me.” Maybe that’s the key to the success of our Club this year to achieving our goals. Everyone or every member needs to do his share in working towards those goals.

Coming to our ‘ground zero’ level President Therese Montecer has certainly embraced and committed herself to the tasks and responsibility of heading our Club.  And she has shown that commitment through the preliminaries and reparations for the year of her administration.  Despite her long reluctance to be Club President and at the same time having taken on higher responsibilities in her Bank, she now embodies what has been a saying in Rotary : “The busy Rotarian is a good Rotarian.’  It bodes well for the Rotary Club of San Juan and its activities towards our new theme Engage Rotary, Change Lives.”
