PRESIDENT'S REPORT
August is the month dedicated by Rotary for Membership.
For RCSJ, we are glad to know that this early, we already have new members -
Ceferino "Jun" Bata, Gigi Rodriguez, Sam Alleje, and Nani Madrasto.
Let us all support them through fellowship and new friendship. On August 31, as
a solid RCSJ, let us join them in the mass district induction for new members.
I would like to thank PP Noni
for pitching in for me last week for the meeting. Thanks too to FDG Benny for
inviting a former RCSJ member Tom Caro to our club meeting. In our recent
Governor visit, PP Jimmy suggested that we adopt "pangkat pangkat"or
grouping system to make our weekly meetings more enjoyable. I propose that we
start it now especially for our forthcoming financial literacy seminar on Sept
14 at the Camelot Hotel. We can go by pangkat in promoting our seminar to the
different rotary clubs of District 3800.
On August 10, Saturday, let us
go together to the Interact Seminar sponsored by the District at the San Juan
National High School from8 am to 10 am. Also on the same day, at 1pm we will do
a joint Zone 7 project in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross "Blood
Letting" project at the San Juan Gym.
On August 13, Tuesday, our club
will launch another Busog Lusog Talino Project at San Juan Elementary School.
Some 40 Grade 1 and 2 pupils will be the beneficiaries of our feeding/nutrition
project in coordination with the Jollibee Foundation. We will also donate 45
chairs for the use in the feeding center of the school. Again, I hope we can
get more donors for the maintenance of this project. Any donations in the form
of rice, food, eggs, etc are welcome.

SECRETARY'S CORNER_08082013
Since
President Therese was absent at last week’s meeting, VP/PP Noni Topacio
presided over the meeting and also took over the chores as Day Chairman in the
absence of IPP Jojo Bacarro. We did not have a speaker for that day, so most of
the meeting was spent discussing the preparations for the September 14 Seminar
Project.
Thanks to
FDG Benny Pe for inviting former member Tom Caro to join us last week. ‘Old
timers’ were happy to receive him and reminisced funny moments like when Tom
caused then District Governor Tino Cacanindin to walkout during our Governor’s
visit. We were so tempted to induct Tom back to our club and renew his
membership but decided to postpone this for another day and wait till Pres.
Therese gets back. Tom promised to attend our future meetings.
Rtn. Jay
Penaflor reported that he was able to get two (2) corporate sponsors for our
Seminar Project. Said sponsors will bring in Php 10 thousand each that will
help defray expenses for this project. Honorary member PP Ver Farcon reported
that at least ten (10) persons from RC Marikina will be attending the seminar.
Add to this the committed sixty (60) attendees from the Global Presidents
Group, we are almost near the target 100 participants that will make our
seminar a rousing success.
Today, PP
Jimmy Ortigas will be pitching our seminar during the meeting of RC Pasig,
while FDG Benny Pe is scheduled to speak at the meeting of RC San Juan-North on
August 29.
We are
scheduled to launch the Busog, Lusog, Talino Feeding Program in our second
school, the San Juan Elementary School on Tuesday August 13. You are all
welcome to join Pres. Therese in this event.
Cheers and enjoy Rotary

EDITORIAL
ADDRESSING EDUCATION and
HEALTH NEEDS BETTER
In his homily in last Sunday’s
Mass, our Vicar for the Cainta-Taytay parishes dwelt on the readings for that
Sunday which strengthened Christ’s preferential for the poor and the children.
It moved that elderly priest, of the SVD order, that he right then offered
everything he did not need to be sold at a “garage” sale. He was also echoing
Pope Francis recent ways of living and going to slums to deemphasize the
trappings of power and riches. And his many homilies and messages exhorting the
faithful to help the poor and elevate them above their poverty.
This could also be connected in
a way to the economic needs of our country. The perceived lack of ‘trickle
down’ effect even as worldwide our country is seen as one of those battling the
trend of poor growth or having financial difficulties. Which brings to mind
what economists say need to bring those good effects, and that is through
education, health and other social services.
These thrusts are not foreign
to Rotary. In fact, many of our projects are in those directions. Such as many
meaningful assistance to the San Juan National High School and the Feeding
Program in the Pinaglabanan Elementary School. They partially address the needs
in education and health improvements. The proposition here presented, a
repetition of a previous one, would be some direct help and assistance to a
handful of families which can benefit them directly.
Maybe as the month for Membership Development, our Club
should bring in more members in the education sector, perhaps those in the
primary and secondary levels. From their experience and network, we could find
a way to have a positive contribution to one, two or three families by helping
them raise and put their gifted or intellectually prepared children to complete
tertiary education and land gainful employment. Similarly, also more members in the health sector will
have direct our attention to specific health issues seemingly lacking in our
community.

What A Wonderful World
I see skies of blue, clouds of
white
The bright blessed day, the
dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a
wonderful world
I see trees of green, red roses
too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a
wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so
pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people
going by
I see friends shakin' hands,
sayin'
"How do you do?"
They're really saying "I
love you"
I hear babies cry, I watch them
grow
They'll learn much more than
I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a
wonderful world
All the colors of the rainbow,
so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people
going by
I see friends shakin' hands
sayin'
"How do you do"
They're really saying "I
love you"
I hear babies cry, I watch them
grow
They'll learn much more than
I'll ever know
And I think to myself what
a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself,
what a wonderful world
ROTARY INFORMATION
RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS
The month of
August has been designated as Membership month. For this month, we will feature
rotary information on Membership. The best way to start in to have a reviewer
on how to recruit new members.
As of July 30,
2013, Rotary International had about 34,000 clubs with a total of over 1.2
million members worldwide in 200 countries and geographical areas. Starting
with only 4 founders in 1905, its growth has been phenomenally impressive. Yet,
the humanitarian needs of communities around the world also continue to grow.
If Rotary is to maintain its capability to help humanity, it must continue to
recruit more service-minded individuals to its ranks. Richard King, Rotary
International President for RY 2001-2002 states it very aptly – “To serve, we
must grow!
Here are
basic ideas to help clubs succeed in membership recruitment
Develop the
Right Attitude towards Growth.
Recent studies
made by RI show that as many as 90% of Rotarians worldwide have not yet
sponsored another member: Thus the first step is to build the right attitude
among the club’s existing members. Membership growth must be fundamental
concern of all members, not just its leaders or the President or the district
governor. Start by holding a special club assembly or meeting devoted to
persuading all members to accept the responsibility of sponsoring new
Rotarians, using the following explanation.
Every year,
our club will always experience membership loses due to attrition(members
moving to other localities, transferring jobs, getting ill, or becoming
dissatisfied). The annual attrition rate is anywhere from 10 to 30%. If we do
not recruit our club size will slowly decline. So first and foremost, we need
to invite new members to replace attrition loses.
If we keep
membership to a small circle of friends or to a set limit, we will soon find
friendships stagnant, members burned out and unable to work on new projects.
Younger new members can contribute new ideas, resources and networks for our
club. We need more hands for service!
